"I'll do my best," Tempest replied, closing his notebook. "If you want to see how things go, you'll either have to come back with me and get his agreement to sit in, or talk to him another time. I won't be able to tell you what's happened because of Healer-patient confidentiality. Do you need a minute to think about it?"

"He...he asked me to stay with him," Sean said. "I told him I wouldn't leave. I mean I...I don't know. It's a lot to take in, you know? But I said I wouldn't leave." Did consent even matter when the guy changed by the minute sometimes? Whatever the answer, he couldn't bring himself to just leave. It seemed cruel when the guy thought he was just a kid.

Tempest nodded his understanding. "We'll ask if you can sit in," he said. He stood and gestured to the opening between the curtains, then led the way back to the other room. Where his patient was curled up asleep on the bed.
"I'll wake him in a moment," he said, and opened his notebook again. Instead of the notes he'd taken moments before, it was a registry of students. He flipped through, bypassing the morning and the night preceding, and going through the day. "Do you remember what time... Ah, here he is." He hadn't been sure which name to look for, or if it was any of the ones Sean had been given, but here was the name River and the reason given as migraine.
Tempest closed his notebook again and set it aside. "River," he called softly. He lay a hand on the young man's leather-covered shoulder. "River, you're in the hospital wing, I'd like to speak to you."

River did not want to wake up. The motion of drawing his brows together brought blinding pain, and a momentary attempt to relieve the pressure by relaxing them did the same. He let them freeze in a half-frowning position and groaned.
"What day is it?" he asked, hardly daring to make a sound. He'd blacked out again. He hoped the things he remembered had been vivid dreams. If he was in the hospital wing, maybe he'd just left that guy he'd met...

"Tuesday," Tempest said gently. "Sean Sullivan is here, River. He brought you in and would like to stay while I talk with you. It's your decision. If you'd rather talk with me alone, I'll ask him to wait outside.

The word no was on River's lips, but didn't come out. A peek through his lashes said that Sean Sullivan was indeed the guy he'd met—apparently yesterday—but the guy was a stranger. A stranger he'd apparently been going to coffee with.
His options, then, were to talk to a Healer about things he didn't remember, or didn't want to remember, and be branded crazy, refuse to talk and be stuck for maybe hours until the Healer finally let him go, or say it was a migraine. Maybe it had just been a migraine. He'd been here all night, and that Sean guy had come back to check on him because he was one of those weird nice people. Maybe he could just get some more migraine potion and they could go their separate ways.
"He can stay," he breathed.

"All right," Tempest said. "Have a seat, Sean." The visitor's chair was still open. Tempest could see how much pain River was in, but if the young man was suffering from spell damage, or if he was suffering withdrawals from a potion addiction, giving him a pain potion would only be feeding the problem. He needed to find out first. In lieu of a pain potion, he let his veela side glow.
"Do you remember your visit here yesterday?" he asked, and at a nod went on. "Tell me what you remember of it, and please tell me everything you remember happening after."

River didn't want to tell anyone what he remembered, and the first telling, he skipped everything that had happened after he'd come to the hospital wing. Something about the Healer had made him want to please though, and eventually he admitted he remembered more. He remembered the pain potion he'd gotten, and going back to his dorm room. He remembered sitting down to write a note, and he remembered waking up in an unfamiliar room, finding clothes that weren't his, and trying to sneak out. He remembered knocking something over, remembered a flash here or there, and then waking up in the hospital wing. He remembered nothing else.

Tempest did every test he could think of for spell damage, for potions, even for Muggle drugs, but found nothing more than a trace of alcohol which wouldn't explain such blackouts or extreme mood changes. The young man showed signs of sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and malnutrition, but these were more likely symptoms, not the cause. There was always the chance that River was faking it, but for what gain?

River wasn't surprised that the Healer couldn't find anything. There was nothing wrong with him, absolutely nothing. He wouldn't volunteer the bits that made him feel the craziest, not when he could explain them away. He had horrible headaches and blackouts. He didn't know anything else.

River might not know anything, but Tempest knew what Sean had told him. Tempest knew he'd seen a conscious, if dazed, person walk into the Hospital Wing. Something was wrong, but he couldn't find a cause.
"I can't in good conscience give you pain potions," he said at last. "I'm going to ask you to see one of our counselors. When there's no physical reason for things, counseling can help."

River's eyes widened, and his brows drew together again in the moment before he winced at the return of pain. "I'm not addicted to pain potions!" he argued, though there wasn't much energy behind the words. He didn't want to go to counseling of any sort, and for a moment he wished he could black out, that he could suddenly find himself back in his dorm room. He was stuck though. He shook his head.

"Things might go faster if you let me work with the counselors," Tempest said. That would require some paperwork, and Tempest used what talents he had to get that paperwork signed. He'd send the counselor a copy of his notes, and with Sean's permission a copy of those notes as well. Maybe the new counselor would have some ideas that Tempest didn't.

Sean had no reason to refuse to sign the page, and he only cast a brief glance over it before leaving his signature. It was only when he was about to hand the page back that something clicked in his brain and he searched out the name of the counselor again. "Is this name right? Because my brother's name is Scott."

"Scott Sullivan," Tempest nodded. "He's in an apprenticeship with VU's therapist. A talented young man. "This paper is sharing your information with both of them," he went on. "Just the information I have. They won't be able to discuss anything else with one another unless you sign papers in the counseling office as well."
