Silver was all nerves, despite his rational side's knowledge that there was nothing wrong with what he was planning. This was something which had been happening every month since he was fifteen, a total of eight years now. Eight years. A third of his life. And it had been happening for Vilkas even longer.
"The closest I ever had to company was a Healer in California," he told Ayla. He tried not to pace the floor, but he had too much energy, and even Belle could feel it. She'd been restless all day simply because he was radiating everything he felt. There was the higher body heat, the tense muscles, the shorter temper, and the fact that he'd spent most of the night ravaging Ayla. He eyed her again a moment before turning to the fire.
Normally he'd go into his office, where he did school work, wrote, and occasionally fell asleep with a book in his hand. He'd set a muffling spell, change, and Ayla would let him out the next morning. He'd spend the week chewing on something constructive, curling up beside his wife or in front of the fireplace, and when it was over, he'd catch up on his school work and resume life as usual. It was far easier here than it had ever been before, and Ayla's easygoing nature meant that he didn't even have to leave home.
But he'd be leaving this time. Vilkas had offered him insight into the life of someone who'd been raised as a werewolf, someone who hadn't begun learning to hide it as soon as it had happened.
"And I'll miss you," he added, as though that alone should allow him to cancel on his neighbor.

"You'll be fine, Silver," Ayla said, eying the knitting in her lap. She'd picked up the habit during the pregnancy and found it soothing and fun, and so had never given it up. "You can miss me for a night, yeah? Tomorrow you can spend all day being clingy if it helps." Her eyes shifted up to look at him and she grinned. It was a good idea for Silver and Vilkas to spend more time together, and this night had been many months in the making. She was trying to remain casual, hoping that staying calm would help keep Silver from getting too worked up.

Clingy. He knew he was a little clingy, but there were so few people he felt truly comfortable with that it was hard not to be. "What if someone sees us in form?" He sighed. They'd already gone over the answer for that one. There were so many animagi in the area that a couple of wolves would hardly be noticed. Even if people connected it to the full moon, the very worst that could happen would be getting dropped off at their respective houses and told to stay in. And Silver didn't intend to make trouble to begin with. He took his potion religiously, and he'd be perfectly harmless.

"Most people can't tell the difference at a glance," Ayla said. The differences between a wolf and a werewolf in form were small and, now that werewolves weren't as stigmatized and the war had been over for nearly two decades, most people weren't even looking for said differences. She looked at her work, noted where she was, then set it aside to stand and approach her husband. "It'll be okay. He's been doing this for years, right? He'll know where to avoid and where is safe. I think this will be good for you."

"You're right," Silver said. He couldn't help eyeing her again as she approached, the curves that were slightly curvier in places since Belle was born, and the flat stomach she'd regained over the past nine months. "Are you sure you want to do that?" he asked as she neared. "He'll be here any time." And if there was one noticeable change near the full moon besides turning into a wolf, it was his deep connection with the physical, which seemed to be increasing.

"If anyone would understand, it would be him, right?" Ayla asked, grinning as she slipped her arms up and around Silver's shoulders. It wasn't like Vilkas would just barge in, anyway. "Besides, I kinda like the look in your eyes around the full moon. It's like you could eat me up." It was a sexy look, desire and possession in one, and it was a hell of a turn-on.

Silver gave an unconscious little growl as he slid helpless arms around Ayla. He could eat her up, and had given her a demonstration just this morning. "I don't know how I got so lucky," he murmured, the words disappearing into the crook of her neck. His lips could feel her pulse there, and it stirred his own.
Did all werewolves get like this? That was something the books couldn't tell him. Very few were written by werewolves themselves, and those which existed detailed social hardships, not the actual experience of transformation. Social change was slow in coming, and even a decade or two ago he would have been shunned. Ah, but this would change people's perceptions again, this rise and fall of different needs according to the moon. He liked his steaks even rarer than usual, he felt restless, his senses were heightened almost painfully...

Ayla considered herself lucky. She had happened upon a sexy man who regularly had an almost insatiable yearning for her, such as now when his tall form curled towards hers to nuzzle her neck. Were it not for the knock at the door, she would have been more than happy to let Silver have his way until the eventual turn, but as it was she pulled slightly away from him. "Do you want to greet him, or should I?"

Silver was still more than a little distracted, and he ducked his head again. "He can wait," he growled against her neck. His hands pulled her closer against his body, and he tried to ignore the part of him that said he shouldn't leave Vilkas on the porch for an hour in the cold. "Mm, just a quick one," he asked. The couch was close. The floor was closer.

Ayla gasped lightly, but by now she was used to Silver's interest around this time of the month and was able to keep her senses. "You can have a quick one in the morning. Or a long one, whichever. Use this energy with him," she said as she attempted to disengage herself from her husband. It turned her on when he growled like that, the low rumble she could feel in his chest when it was pressed to hers, but this was an important night and she could wait.
She lifted a hand to direct Silver's face away from her neck so she could look at him. "Invite him in. it's worth it," she said as her eyes found his.

He wanted to growl again. He could feel that she wanted it too, could smell her interest, but the eye contact brought him back to himself. He frowned, disappointed, but after a moment he let her go and turned away. Even his walk was a bit more lupine this time of month, his lanky, broad-shouldered form loping more than just getting to point B.
He grabbed his cloak and opened the door. "I'd invite you in, but I'll never leave if I don't do it now," he said. He looked back at Ayla. I love you, he mouthed. He didn't dare try to kiss her goodbye.

It took a moment for Vilkas to analyze the scents coming from his friend's home, but he soon smiled knowingly. "Come on, then, before you get dragged back in." He didn't have a cloak, and was in fact dressed rather minimally. Despite the snow on the ground, his feet were bare, and he wore nothing more than a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He liked the almost dangerous chill on his skin, the feeling like he was connected to the earth. He stepped back and gestured for Silver to walk with him. The moon was still hiding, though he could sense it now. It wouldn't be long before the round orb hung heavy in the sky and let him run.

"How are you not freezing?" Silver asked. He wrapped his cloak around himself and began walking even as he pulled on his gloves. "Winter is bad enough the rest of the month." His body temperature, already hovering around 101, crept up to 102 at least when the moon grew full. That made being outside a special kind of frozen hell.
He shivered, then glanced up into the sky. His energy wanted to turn to panic. He should be indoors, should be locked up somewhere for the next week. He shouldn't be out when the first change was about to take place, potion or no potion. His instincts said to den up, to find his place and stay there. It didn't feel right.

Vilkas shrugged. "The cold's never bothered me. I mean...perhaps before I was bitten, but I barely remember a time before. I never really thought about it. Maybe it's because of being around a lot of wolves after. I didn't spend a lot of time with the pack, but it was a few months. They told me to embrace instead of fight." Maybe being okay in the cold was just part of it. Often he felt more wolf than human, and wolves didn't mind snow.

Silver shook his head. There were a lot of things to embrace in life, but freezing his butt off wasn't one of them. When someone had a fever you didn't put them out in the snow, did you? No, you kept them warm. His body temperature was the equivalent of a high fever right now. This was miserable. If he should have kept up his side of the conversation, it didn't occur to him. It was far too easy to slip into thought, and he had a lot of thinking to do.
