"Do what mom said or I'll make you sorry," Cat called to his brother, then gave Evelyn a sly smile. He'd told her she'd never get him in dress robes. His brother had been so excited, though. Who could say no to that level of begging? When they were gone, he shut the door and turned back into the living room.
"I have a lot of school work to catch up on, so you get a quiet night," he told Lani, flopping onto the couch. He'd been keeping his parties outside or at the club lately so she could decide whether or not to be involved, but things were still as wild as ever. He didn't push her to participate. Jai had been quiet around strangers once, as crazy as he'd always really been, so he figured it would happen when she was ready.

Lani watched from the window as the other two left. "If I'm entirely honest, a quiet night will be rather strange, all things considered." There was a ball happening, held by friends of her family who hadn't held a ball in years. And her family wasn't attending, except her brother. She had been content to spend the past months in a bit of introspection and self-improvement, but knowing this world-changing ball was happening without her was a stark reminder of what she had left behind, even if it was temporary.
She pulled her eyes away from the window to look at the man who had accepted her without question into his home. "You really have no interest in attending a ball?" she asked.

"None," Cat said, leaning back into the couch with a heavy book and a stack of parchment. "I always hated that stuff. I'd rather let a Muggle dentist go at my mouth." To be fair, his stepdad's dentist seemed to do a fine job, but Cat had always gotten and would always get magical healthcare.
"Do you miss it?"

"I haven't been officially attending for long, but I enjoy them," Lani said. "I likely enjoy the dancing a little too much." She couldn't help it, though, the music and the feel of moving with a partner was wonderful. Rather than find a place to sit, she moved slowly through the room, running light fingers over book shelves.

The dancing. Cat thought about that one as he started marking a student's paper. No, you didn't get to choose your animagus form, and you didn't gain the power to morph from one creature to another at will. "I haven't done anything ballroom-appropriate since I was a kid." How old had he been? It had to have been third year when he'd stopped cooperating. It had driven his mother crazy, but aside from casting the Imperius curse, what could she have done about it?

Though that didn't surprise her, Lani kept the comment to herself. "I find it difficult to imagine you doing much that is appropriate for a ballroom," she said, however. "Of course, now that I've seen Evelyn outside of a ballroom, I suppose such things matter little." Perhaps it was all a matter of where she first met someone.

"Don't tell me she fit in," Cat said, his lips quirking at the thought. Tattoos could be hidden, but she radiated sex and loved to flirt. Could she even dance? He tried to picture her doing the Chaconne on her four-inch heels and chuckled. Damn, he was surprised he actually remembered the name of that thing. He'd hated it so much...

"She was with Eros the first time," Lani said. "He can make anyone fit in." Her fingers stopped their perusal of shelves that were familiar at this point. "The second time there were more things for everyone to focus on, such as the Blackwood-Hardts and my brother's engagement." And then the revelation of it as a prank.

So she'd been overshadowed and overlooked. That made more sense, though he still couldn't imagine why she liked it. It was all about being someone else's idea of perfect, about self-control for the sake of self-control with the only benefit being making other people comfortable, which was really no benefit at all. Yes, when he threw a party he made sure his guests were having a good time, but not at his own expense. It was about fun, not about showing off.
And when I transfigure I'll have black feathers that shimmer green in some light and purple in other light, and sometimes blue...
Cat drew a big red circle and started scribbling in the margins. He'd asked a freshman class over halfway through the semester for short answers about human transfiguration and so far it looked like wishful thinking attempting to reach the word count.
"So if they weren't there would you want to go?" he asked Lani absently.

Lani had to consider that for a moment, and was unable to come up with a proper answer. "Perhaps. It would be nice to see people again, but I don't believe I'm ready for all of the questions. Of course, I couldn't go, anyway." She wasn't the type who could attend alone, and she had no one to take her. She stepped to the window to watch tendrils of clouds drift across the darkening sky.

"Why not?" Cat asked. "And why answer all their questions? If your parents aren't there you don't have to answer to them, they won't arrest you for disappearing for a while. You could just play mysterious. Going back doesn't have to mean being exactly the same. Screw your brother and his boyfriend. Do what makes you happy."

Husband. But Lani didn't correct him. "I can't show up alone," she said. "If I were older, then perhaps I could, but it isn't an option for now. I suppose that's a little odd, isn't it? I left home, have barely sent my parents anything to reassure them, and here I am worrying about what is proper at a ball." She glanced over her shoulder at Cat.

"If they haven't told anyone, it doesn't count," Cat said. He looked up and caught Lani's eyes before it really hit him, and then his brows rose. "No," he said stubbornly. He looked determinedly back down at his papers, even if he wasn't seeing them anymore. His mother sent him robes now and then hoping he'd wear them and he never did, and never would. That world wasn't for him. He was happy right where he was.

"I asked for nothing," Lani said, though when her thoughts aligned with his she couldn't help but be a little amused. Her lips curved lightly and she turned from the window. "It would surprise Evelyn." She folded her hands together in front of her. Going wasn't really in her plans, but that didn't mean she couldn't joke just a little, right?

"And I'd never live it down," Cat said. He glanced up again when he realized she'd only been teasing. Was he that uptight about it? He bit his tongue on a childish you can't make me and thought about it despite his best attempts not to. It had been almost a decade and he still hated it as much as he had then. Why? His mother rarely bothered him about it anymore. She knew it was a waste of time.
