Vilkas sat back as the fire burned beside him. The clear sky sparkled above him, and he leaned back on his elbows to turn his head up. He closed his eyes. A gentle breeze mussed his hair and brought the salty scent of the sea to his nose. This evening was an evening away from kids, away from his studies, away from responsibility. As it should be.
His brows wrinkled for just a moment before the breeze brought the smoke from his fire back to him. He should finish cooking.
He sat up and prodded the fire, then put the food atop. Things he had foraged on his own, but that didn't matter. He wanted to treat the mother of his little litter; neither of them got breaks, really, and even rarer they got breaks at the same time. While most people would simply shove the kids off to grandparents, his own parents cared little, and Abi's were absent or dead. Which made time alone together to discuss the kids rare.
But they had found an evening, and Vilkas was there earlier. And so he had made a fire, and started cooking some food, and he watched the stars and heard the waves crashing on the shore.

Abi's lips were quirked in a smile as she approached, sandals making little noise on the sand, though she knew he'd hear her all the same. She adjusted the wicker basket against her hip and made an effort to straighten her face. She had news, but she wanted to surprise Vilkas. She thought he'd be interested, even if it had nothing to do with him, outside the changes it could mean for the children.
She managed to look nonchalant, except for the fact that she'd taken obvious care with her appearance she normally didn't have time for. Silky blond hair hung to her shoulders in loose curls instead of a haphazard bun, and she wore low-slung jeans and a tank that only just reached past her navel. Dare and Michael had generously taken all four children and their nanny for the night, and she was free.
"Hey, Daddy, I brought a few things," she said, then blushed lightly. She really should have called him Vilkas, but it was a habit. She brushed it off and forgot not to smile.

Vilkas chuckled and turned to watch as Abi came towards the little makeshift camp. He knew others thought it strange he was just friends with the mother of his children, but it worked for them. She was beautiful, there was no doubt, though she just didn't hit all his buttons. She really was beautiful, though.
"You did?" he asked. "I said you didn't need to bring anything. Well..." he chuckled again, "unless you need some vegetables, which I kind of forget a lot of the time."

Abi chuckled. It was an effort not eyeing those incredible abs he always had on display, especially considering the dry spell she was in, but she put her mind to conversation instead. "Just a salad," she said, "and some rolls." And a bottle of wine. She sat cross-legged beside the fire, the warmth welcome on the cool English night. She'd brought a blanket just in case, but between the fire and Vilkas, she might not need it.
"I have some news," she said. Dammit. She'd meant to wait.

Vilkas stoked the fire again, turning over the shells he had managed to collect. No butter and garlic, but they were sweet enough on their own. "News? Can't it wait?" They had this one evening, this one chance, to be free from responsibility. He looked over at her, the flames from the fire flickering and dancing on her face, a face he knew well by now. Though, he didn't think he had ever seen it over a campfire.

Abi steeled herself. She still had mixed feelings about it, but excitement overlaid it all. "My father wants to meet the kids," she said. "He's alive, he was going to return to California, but he found out I was here. He stopped by when the children were out with Nanny von Trapp and I took the next day off to catch up with him." She held her breath on his reaction. He knew about her parents' divorce, her father's absence, and her mother's death. This changed things quite a bit.

"Is he a good man, now?" Vilkas asked after some moments. He dished out the clams that had opened, then moved around the sand they had been cooked in, as if something else was there. "I don't...at least my dad stayed in my life." It was difficult to come to terms with the kinds of fathers there were in the world. Vilkas just knew he wanted to be the best of them. He shifted and sat up, pulling his knees toward him and settling his elbows on them.

Abigail looked toward the sky, but she was seeing her father, both as he'd left and as he'd looked over a decade later, standing on her porch with his hat in his hands. "He was always a good man," she said. "I looked up to him, and I don't think he'd have left if he hadn't thought it was for the best." She looked down at Vilkas, and her brows knitted at the obvious emotions on his face.
"He was a respected professor and... I don't want to make excuses for him, but he wants to meet you, too."

Does he know I'm young? Does he know I'm half wolf? Does he know.... This was supposed to be relaxing! Talking about the kids, yes, but relaxing. He breathed, a deep breath that started in his stomach and filled his lungs. "If...Abi, I don't know," he said, then looked up at her. Vilkas ran his hands through his hair. A man who left and came back didn't deserve to touch their kids, but Abit wanted it...

"Then don't decide right now," Abi said. "He's been gone a long time finding himself, and he can wait a while longer. I haven't told the kids, and I won't until you're okay with it. I grew up, I made my own life, and it's hard for me too, but I'm hoping for the best and he was a good father until my parents divorced."
She busied herself taking things out of the picnic basket, and smiled to herself. Vilkas did tend to forget the non-meat items, but it didn't really bother her. It meant she got to choose the sides without worrying about a main course.
"Take your time, Vilkas," she said, and poured them each a little wine.

Vilkas was three glasses in and the bottle had been refilled, and he was chatty. "You know, every girl I find just..." Well, they all ran away when he told them there were kids and another woman. It seemed like no one could accept past transgressions. Who knew how they would react if they knew what he was. "You never ran," he said, looking over at her. When had they gotten so close? He could reach out and touch her hair....
"And you're beautiful. Wait, I don't mean that as an afterthought." He frowned a second and tossed his glass to the side. "I mean it as a fact," he said when he looked back at her.

Abi giggled. She'd set her own glass aside only moments ago, and wasn't even thinking about it anymore. "With abs like yours, I don't get it," she said. "I'd f~ you." Her eyes widened briefly before she laughed again. "Was that my out loud voice?" Maybe she shouldn't have brought wine, considering how long it had been since she'd slept with anyone. Well, it was too late now!
"And you're a great father," she added. "Not an afterthought." Okay, it had been an afterthought. It had been years, but Vilkas was definitely one of the best she'd had. Lovers, not fathers.

Vilkas laughed, the sound starting as a rumble deep in his chest before it bubbled its way out of his mouth. For a moment he wanted to contradict her, but it passed in a heartbeat. There were stars above and fire near, and maybe, just maybe... "You've f~ed me already, you see where that got us?" He leaned back on his arms, letting the warmth of the fire and the cool of the night play against his skin.

"That's the only reason I haven't tried it again!" Abi said with a laugh. It was true. Aside from that fear of another mass pregnancy, he was exactly what she wanted. "God, you're great with the kids, you're gorgeous, and..." She made a rolling growl, then laughed at herself. "Lycanthropy doesn't hurt at all. You're always so warm..." She reached out to settle her hand on one muscular arm. She'd actually started exercising more herself, now that she had Nanny von Trapp around. It never hurt to be healthier.

"You aren't even my type," Vilkas said, "that's the funniest thing." And she had said lycanthropy like it meant nothing. But it always means something, doesn't it? He and Silver still had to schedule around it. "You little nymph, you, you seduced me, anyway!" He laughed again, because laughing came easily to him, but he also reached over to touch her arm. Her skin was so soft.
