"I didn't realize you could see through walls," Cat said dryly, "or I'd have done something more interesting." Evelyn was upstairs at that very moment and the jerkass on the porch wasn't helping his case at all. Hadn't Cat just said that Lani made her own decisions?
"You can be as polite an a~hole as you want, but you're still an a~hole. Now, please," Cat said, echoing the man's barely-polite tone, "get off my porch before I call Campus Aurors. If Lani wants to talk to you, nothing I could do would stop her. She knows where to find you." Cat moved to shut the door.

"If you go speak with him, you'll also be giving him what he wants, you know," Evelyn said, though she had the feeling that Lani knew that already. "Do you want one of us to stay with you while you talk to him?" Moral support was usually helpful, but some things needed to be done alone.

Yes. Having someone with her, someone on her side to support her, that would be wonderful, but Lani shook her head. She didn't want to be someone held up by others. She wanted to be...what did she want? Images flashed through her mind's eye, Carolynn, Mallory. Women who managed to be powerful within their Society roles. Evelyn, of course, was powerful in her own right, but that was different, she thought.
"I will speak with him," she said, stepping out of the room and ensuring her dress settled properly around her. She only realized after she had shut her door that she had forgotten to slip on shoes. Well, Mano would simply have to deal with that. Wait, why did it even matter if Mano cared about her footwear? She gave herself a mental shake. "I would rather you were close, but perhaps confronting my brother is something I should do alone?" She wasn't quite sure if it was wise.

"But does she know I'm standing here wanting to speak with her?" Mano asked. Merlin's beard, but a part of him wanted to just shove his way through to get to his sister. The man had called him an a~hole, and no one did that! Not, at least, to his face. He resisted. "Would it really take much effort to ask a girl if she wants to see her brother?"

"You're doing a lot of assuming here," Cat said. If the guy needed this explained, he'd explain it once. "After I shut the door on you the first time, Lani was consulted about your presence." Was that proper enough for the man to finally listen? "Judging by the fact that she is not downstairs, you have her answer. I only opened the door so I wouldn't have a belligerent man standing on my porch whining like a kid. I've decided I can handle that. Goodbye."
Cat closed the door again, turned off the porch light, and set that silencing spell after all.

Mano could have screamed in frustration. He just wanted to talk to Lani! Eros was gone, and he wanted to talk to the only person mentioned in the letter, was that so much to ask? His fingers raked through his hair. No, he had never dealt with traumas or crises well. Rather, he had avoided them altogether until he had Eros to help him deal with it, and even then he had failed. Now Eros was gone, and he found himself pacing the dark little porch, out-of-place robes swishing along the floor as he tried to figure out his next move.

Lani still didn't know if she wanted this conversation to be something she did alone, but she descended the stairs with Evelyn behind her. When she saw Cat, she straightened a back that didn't need it, though her chin did need pulling up. "Is he still here?" she asked, clasping her hands in front of her. "Mano, that is?" As if it could be anyone else she was asking about.

"If he is, he's standing on a dark porch," Cat said. He looked at Lani. "You do not have to talk to him. My first impression is he's an entitled a~hole who needs to get his head out of the dark ages. Told me I was keeping him from you, like you're a f~ing trophy. Pardon my French." He tried to tone it down around Lani, as she gave off all kinds of Virgin Mary innocent vibes, but... well, actually, that was toned down. He had a lot more creative ways to describe Mano Berwyn. He didn't move from the door just yet.

Lani's eyes darted off to the side without her permission, though she managed to drag them back into place. "The dark ages are where Society lives," she said. And it was why she had spoken a word that ran Indigo off. As far as swears went, she had lived here long enough that she easily overlooked them. Not that they didn't register, they simply weren't important any longer. "I...my day has been...eventful, to say the least. One of those events involved Mano. Perhaps it would be better if I talked to him."

Evelyn moved to stand beside Cat. "It's your choice, honey," she said. "If you want to talk to him, you can. Of course, you can always run in here begging for a distraction and I'm sure I could figure something out." She could run out with her tits flapping in the air, or simply step out to discuss the precise techniques Eros had in the bedroom. But mostly she wanted to help her little bird.

"If you want to talk to him, talk to him in here, not on the porch. Keep the home court advantage. We can sit in our room with the door open, or I'll transform and hang out by the windows, whatever it takes for you to feel as strong as you are." In fact, he liked the idea of watching Mano in form. A little too much.

Lani hadn't even considered the possibility of Cat staying in the room in form and, somehow, the thought of letting him do that gave her a sense of control. Even if Mano knew that Cat was, well, a cat, he wouldn't expect the man to be lounging off to the side. A smile finally found its way to her lips. "I think that you being in form would be wonderful," she said, refusing to acknowledge that Cat thought she was strong.

"Then let's do this. I'll behave," he promised both women. He gave Evelyn a kiss, took down the silencing charm, then transformed. He was already growling a little at the thought of letting that guy in his house, but it was a hell of a lot better than making Lani stand outside with someone she'd run away from. He went the fireplace and curled up in front of it.

Lani tried to resist the urge to scratch Cat's velvet ears, as she had on occasion, then gave in anyway for her own comfort before she went to the door. When she opened it with a few familiar waves of her wand that also turned on the light, she saw a face she hadn't expected to see up close again for a long, long time. The man in front of her stopped pacing to look at her. "Come in," she said, stepping back. "We can talk in the living room."

It was strange to see Lani so close when he hadn't seen her from closer than ten feet away in years. She had grown, he could tell, matured. There was something about her face, about her everything. And when she backed away, did he see toes? Who wore no shoes? Even at home he wore slippers or socks. Oh, it was strange to be invited inside by one's kid sister. "You really live with that...man?"
