Evelyn talked absently of the university as she and Eros made their way down to the coast where the bonfire was going to be. There was a weak trickle of students making their way down, wrapped in layers that could be easily removed if the fire ended up being sufficient. Though it was dusk, the fires had yet to be lit and things were still being prepared.
There was an area boxed in with the ocean and tables on opposite sides and two rings of stones at either end. It created a nice little area for everyone to collect in and would likely keep the warmth in better. Staff darted between the rings of stones to fill them with bits of wood, leaving larger logs out around the circles for seating, or flitted around the tables to set up enough food to satisfy ravenous college students. Against one end of the table rested long thin sticks or bits of metal wire to use for roasting foods over the fires.
"Well, it looks like they've got the right idea," Evelyn said, looking around and nodding.

Eros's gaze scanned the scene, still populated more by staff wizards and witches than students. What did one do at a bonfire? The food was obvious enough, but would there be dancing? He eyed Evelyn at his side. He supposed he'd be following her lead. "I'm ready for my enlightenment, Miss Fiore," he said.

"Once they light up the fires and they get hot enough, we can cook over them," Evelyn said, gesturing toward the tables laden with various cookable and non-cookable foods. "I'm going to guess you've never cooked anything over a fire. It's a hell of a lot of fun." It shouldn't be, it was just warming food, but there was something about it that was appealing. A guy on one end of the area took over a log with a guitar held in half-gloved hands.

Eros had never cooked anything in his entire life, unless one counted potions. There were fundamental differences between letting a potion simmer until it turned a perfect shade of lavender and cooking something he intended to eat. Which appeared to be a variety of sausages. Aren't most things cooked over fire? he wondered. He wouldn't ask and appear stupid, but he did wonder at her excitement. "Do you... cook often?" he asked. "Aside from potions, of course."

"I cook a lot less since I moved here, but back in Italy I cooked all the time. I can make damn good pasta," Evelyn said. "There's nothing like learning from an old Italian Nonna using a recipe that's been around for generations." One of the bonfires caught with a little crackle and, with the help of a wand, whooshed to life, crackling merrily.

"That does sound like quite the experience," Eros said. He'd never thought of cooking as something to be passed down, but he supposed it was as honorable as any other tradition, when presented as such. "My own Grand-mère passed on a love of information. She was a notorious gossip."

"Oh, I could give you some things to gossip about," Evelyn said. "I've only been here a couple of months but I figured out where to look." There weren't a lot of juicy secrets that the school had, but she'd heard a couple of interesting ones, not the least of which was what she'd heard talking to Dare at the club the weekend before.

"Oh, do tell," Eros said. "I know secrets enough to sink empires, though I give my word not to share them." He adored gossip, loved hearing all the minor scandals and adventures of others. He only passed on that which would cause no harm, however. He was far less of a gossip himself than many realized.

"The club I told you about? The owner's a vampire," Evelyn said. She led Eros to the fire to watch as it crackled and the bark of the trees started to turn white with ash. Around the fire the staff member was adding in colors and talking to another onlooker about some of the fire-related charms they intended to use throughout the night for a bit of entertainment.

"A vampire?" Eros asked. He'd met only one during his lifetime, and very briefly. They weren't considered human by many, and though those who mixed with Veelas had few problems, vampires and werewolves weren't usually accepted. "Imagine, a Muggle-friendly club owned by a vampire. That is quite interesting."

Evelyn nodded and looked up at Eros. "I heard he's got a little pet, someone from some American band." She didn't know for sure, she'd just heard people mentioning and gesturing as someone cut a path through the club. "They showed up about the same time I did." It made sense that there would be an influx of new people at the beginning of each term, considering how new the university was.
There was a loud whoosh from the other side of the area as the other fire burst to life. By the time the colors and sparks added to it rivaled the look of their own fire there were many more people milling around. A group of guys who were likely on quidditch teams had a quaffle they were throwing around between the fires. When Evelyn saw people finally braving the food table and leaving with various skewered things, she casually linked an arm with Eros to lead him to the table.
"Come on, we can be naughty and have dessert first."

That was naughty, was it? It certainly felt naughty when she said it like that, and it felt all the more intimate because of her arm around his. "What kind of dessert does one cook over a fire?" he asked, still boggling at the notion of cooking food. He didn't know that he would trust anything that he had cooked, but he'd give it a try.

Evelyn looked up at Eros, who was still a good head taller than her even in her high heels. They would have to go soon, it would exhaust her legs if she had to walk in them on the moving ground much longer. Her voice lowered conspiratorially. "Marshmallows," she said as her lips curved. "Bit of graham cracker, some chocolate, and perfectly roasted marshmallows." She sighed happily just at the thought.

Marshmallows? Evelyn looked as though she'd just imparted some great secret, and that kept Eros from laughing outright. "I'll trust your culinary expertise," he said, hiding his doubt. "You'll need to show me how it's done, of course. I am your willing pupil."
Still, he was unsure about spearing a large, puffy white thing which hardly resembled the marshmallow he'd seen tucked into other desserts. Was it sanitary jabbing a stick through something one intended to eat? Eros chose a thin metal rod instead and hoped that was acceptable.

Evelyn chose a thin stick and slid her arm from Eros' to grab a plate and add the necessities for perfect s'mores. "We can get something else later, but this is what you go to bonfires for, sir," she said, grabbing a handful of marshmallows. "I think I'll like being your teacher, you're such a willing student," she teased.
