"Usually?" Dahlia asked. "What other history is there?" She could see how different subjects were related, but the idea of grouping them was foreign to her. She hated feeling anything less than completely knowledgeable and secure, but was curious enough to set that aside when she was soaking up information. It was all part of why she was so damned good at what she did.

Saren's nose wrinkled slightly, unconsciously. "Mythology and muggle studies are included in the history umbrella," he said. "I took one of each, just so I could at least pretend to be a little more well-rounded." Then he'd avoided them, they held little to no interest for him.

Dahlia gave another meaningless smile. She wasn't any more thrilled by those subjects than he seemed to be, but this wasn't the beginning of a beautiful friendship, it was a dig into what made the school and its students tick. So far it seemed complicated and boring. "Anyone who'd attend a university would have to enjoy Muggle things, wouldn't they?" she asked. University was not a wizarding institution.

"Not particularly," Saren said. "A recruiting agent came to my school and I thought it would be a good opportunity to dig deeper into some things I've been interested in for a while. Purism, the Dark Lord, defense magic. Back home the professors were smart, but it isn't as real to anyone across the pond as it is here." America had been all but untouched.

"Mmm, you're into all that, are you?" Dahlia asked. She put on her innocent face. "You know, people are very touchy about things like that. It's all still very raw." There had been that Tom Riddle a few years back who'd claimed to be the Dark Lord, but Dahlia wasn't entirely certain he had been. Still, better safe than sorry. There were few enough people she'd actually be concerned about pissing off, but he was at the top of the list.

"I know. I can't help what I'm interested in, though," Saren said. "I haven't run across problems with it so far, I know when to keep my mouth shut." The most he'd ever gotten was an odd look here and there. It was in his best interests to not actually go off and offend someone who might turn him in as a suspected Death Eater or something.

"That's a skill so few people have," Dahlia said. In fact, she was exercising that skill that very moment. She had far more self-control than people gave her credit for. Oh, the people she hadn't killed. "So are there Death Eaters around?" she asked. "Or is your nose buried in books looking for what you want?"

Saren looked over curiously. "As far as I'm aware I've never met a Death Eater. I have to admit that it would be interesting, though," he said, his eyes lingering before he looked ahead again. "Talk about a primary source, you know?" There were questions he could ask and special information he could gather.

Dahlia had looked back innocently. "Most of the older ones don't brag about it," she said, as though it were any old conversational topic. "If you met one, what would you ask?" That was no kind of confession at all, and Dahlia put on a sweetly curious expression, not to mention a firm wall around her thoughts. Few people knew or practiced Legilimency, but one could never be too cautious.

"Why they joined, what their beliefs are and why do they believe them, what the initiation rites were like," Saren said. Those were the more acceptable questions to ask. How did you go about torturing muggles probably wouldn't go over too well. His lips curved. "Can I see their mark?" He was curious about that. He'd heard it was darker when the Death Eaters were stronger and that it could fade to almost a scar-type image if enough time passed.

"Ooh, another touchy subject," Dahlia said. "You know, most Death Eaters keep their marks hidden. There's some negative stigma about all that." Purism was still alive, but the actual business of the Dark Lord and his followers had fallen out of fashion. "Why would any sane Death Eater want to tell you those things? It would look worse for them than for you. The curious are everywhere, and the wannabes, even in Hogwarts classrooms."

"I suppose I just have to find one that isn't sane, then," Saren said. "Or an academic one who sees the value of the information, or an ex-Death Eater who wants to raise awareness." There were options, he just had to get his hands on one of them. He knew, though, that the history was still too close for comfort, and that made things difficult. Hell, even things that happened in the '80s didn't have any good history written on them yet, much less more recent affairs.

Dahlia was quiet a moment, thinking. If only this guy was more interesting, she might consider some things... But the few things he'd mentioned liking which were exciting he'd made sound incredibly boring, and she'd already written that interview. Savannah had been disappointment from the first word to the last.
"You might also offer a trade," Dahlia said at last, looking down the corridor as they walked. "Make it beneficial to them, and you'll have an easier time. Something better than discount potions or a bottle of wine." She gave him a sidelong glance. "No one wants to give something for nothing."

Saren looked over at her and his eyes lingered, though he remained silent. A bell rang in the distance after a few moments of silent contemplation. "I hate to cut this short," he said, "but I have class. If you care to continue the conversation, I'll be in my shop later. Maybe I'll have thought of something better than a discount and a bottle of wine to offer."
