"Yes, of course," Evangeline said. She'd hate to offend anyone with her lack of knowledge about what appeared to be a sensitive subject. And fifteen years ago! She'd have been a baby then. She hadn't realized that her mother was skipping things which had happened during her lifetime.
"We were in England then," she mused. "Mother and father married in Ireland, and he took her home with him. I wonder that she never mentioned such a thing. It seems important!"

"Everyone has secrets, my dear Evangeline," Saren said. "I'm sure your mother has a good reason." That didn't mean it wasn't odd. He looked over her, wondering where else her education was lacking. A finger slid around the edge of his glass as he thought. This could be fun, he hadn't had such a diversion in a long time, at least since he'd bought the shop.

Evangeline shook her head. "I'm sure she just didn't think I needed to know," she said. "I think she wanted me to go to Ireland some day, so she just told me the history of Ireland." Evangeline didn't like the idea of secrets. She liked the idea that everyone was who they seemed to be. Her brothers were jerks, her mother was broken but loving, and Saren was intelligent and kind.

"Well, I'll help you fill in the blanks," Saren said, glancing around at the various books. He grabbed one and thumbed through it. "I hope you don't mind the house, because it looks like you'll be spending some time here." He smiled and handed her the book. "This will help, it's a history of the wars." Then she could find some more things to have questions about, leading to her back on his doorstep.

"Oh, thank you!" Evangeline said, surprised. She knew it was a loan, but she felt very important being entrusted with one of Saren's belongings. She wondered if he'd notice just a sliver off the edge of one of the pages. Divination, as with all magic, was easier with a bit of the person in question, or a bit of something they owned.
"I don't mind your house at all," she went on. "It's very cozy. I'll read this as soon as I can, I promise."

"Take your time," Saren said. It wouldn't be difficult to get his book back and he doubted she would run off with it, anyway, without any intent to return it. She didn't seem like the type to do something like that. "You know, to be honest, I don't typically have pretty girls I don't know coming up to me asking for tutoring." He wondered if she'd blush again.

Evangeline didn't disappoint; she blushed and was unable to think of a thing to say for what seemed like minutes, though it could have been far less. "Thank you," she said after a time, and held the book close to her chest for a moment before setting it down.

"If I ever say something that crosses the line as tutor, tell me," Saren said, bringing his glass to his lips. "The last thing I want is for you to think I'm a creep or anything for complimenting you." Maybe he was a creep, but that didn't mean he wanted her to think he was. It was important to know where her limits were. He tipped his glass back, finishing the amber liquid.

"Oh, I'm sure you couldn't," Evangeline said. "You've been nothing but a gentleman." He was also the only man she'd ever been completely alone with, excluding a couple old, married professors. Her mother and brothers had done their utmost to keep her secluded, for whatever reasons.

Saren smiled and pulled himself to his feet, intending to get another drink. "I'll have to show you around the house," he said. "If you're going to be here regularly you should know the lay of the land." If it happened to lead to something else, he wouldn't argue. He was increasingly glad he'd given his house a brief cleaning before she showed up.

Evangeline didn't disappoint, and a blush stained her cheeks. She saw Saren stand and, thinking he meant the promised tour to be now, she stood as well.

Saren could certainly show her around now, though he hadn't been sure she would take the bait. Once he'd refilled his glass, he gestured to the room he'd decided to use as a study. "When you're done with that book, come back by, I've got plenty to choose from," he said, opening the door and gesturing inside. "I brew all of my potions in here, too." It left the room with a strange smell that was a mixture of many ingredients, with just a hint of ash.
