Hayden Carrow.
The name didn't tell Indigo much. He knew a lot of Haydens, most younger than him and of various genders. Asking the shift manager hadn't helped, because apparently the guy didn't know. The surname was familiar, too. He was pretty sure he'd heard it in History of Magic at some point, but couldn't place it.
Around the time the new person should be arriving, Indigo was standing in the corner by one of three pc's, keeping anyone from claiming the one nearest the counter. He stood on its left, propped an in use for training card on top of the keyboard, and tried to find something to think about that might actually hold his interest.
He'd been zoning in and out since the other day. He'd cried, updated his blog, changed his Facebook status, then refused to check either. He knew the kinds of comments he'd find and didn't feel like being backed with encouragement and righteous anger. He'd called his parents, but most of the call had been him sobbing and them telling him they loved him and assuring him that if he needed a semester off, he could come home.
He hadn't taken them up on it. He'd sat in his new three-bedroom house and packed everything that belonged to Jory or Astra. He'd taken down pictures and, crying again, packed them into their own boxes and shoved them into Jory's old office. He'd gamed and he'd gamed, and he'd considered buying a bunch of vodka and orange juice, but in the end it had seemed like too much trouble. He'd still be miserable, anyway.
His face was pale mostly, but it seemed the redness of his nose and cheeks wouldn't fade. His eyes had dark smudges beneath them that he'd halfheartedly attempted to hide with an old stick of concealer, but he'd given up. He was wearing clean clothes and his tie was mostly straight. That would have to be enough.

Hayden wore simple black slacks and a white button-down, though she didn't know if her boss approved of the fact that some ink probably showed through the fabric. Considering there was also ink on her hands and neck, however, she really didn't see how it mattered. As she approached the guy she was supposed to be getting training from, she reached up with both hands to smooth the hair at the sides of her head back. Although she tended to play with gender and confuse people, when she spoke a high voice typically gave her away. So to speak. It wasn't like she gave a damn about pronouns, anyway.
"Hayden," she said, sticking out a hand. The nails were painted today to match bright lips that, to any who knew her, gave today away as a girl day. "They said you're going to teach me muggle stuff." She had only been hired a few days before, the first step in moving out of the god-forsaken dorms, and since she had an interest in muggle things Berwyn had shunted her off to the newest section of the cafe.

At least one of Indigo's questions was answered. He took that hand, but his own shake wasn't what it normally was. "Yeah, I'm the WiFi guy," he said. He flicked a pointed glance at the Free WiFi sign as he let go of her hand, then moved the training sign. Today, he was all business, no enthusiasm. "My name's Indigo," he went on. "If you have any questions I can probably answer them, I mostly stay around here, but if they're short in the back I know that stuff too. You'll probably get put at a register, but you get to learn this stuff first because people will ask you questions, and I'm not always here."
Indigo took a deep breath and went on, reciting all the introductory information by memory. "Don't worry if you can't remember everything today, you'll be here at least three days, longer if you need it which a lot of people do and if you've never worked with computers before you'll get a refresher the first week of every month. It's usually after hours, but you'll get paid."
There, that was done. He looked at Hayden almost assessingly. "So do you know anything about computers, or are we starting from scratch?" It was usually hard to tell. He liked getting someone who already knew. It meant a couple hours of just d~ing around on the internet together while he talked about the cafe.

"I know a little," Hayden said, crossing her arms and peering over at the machine. "I'm pureblood, but I've ah...spread my wings over the past few years. I can use one of these for the basics, which is better than most wizards can say." Plus she was actually interested in learning, which was another bonus. "Berwyn said this is all new, don't think I've ever seen anything like it in a wizard town before." Not that there were many wizarding places to begin with.

"Yeah, it's new," Indigo said. He didn't have the energy to brag about his part in things. He gestured to the chair. "Sit down, show me what you can do," he said. The computer was off at the moment, as was the screen. He turned away and grabbed a chair from a nearby table so that he could sit, too.

Hayden could turn on the computer and get to the famous and mysterious internet fairly well, though if something screwed up she wouldn't know how to fix it. "Berwyn seems like a big Society type, how'd you get him to let you do this?" she asked. The man had told her some of the basics, but that was little more than Indigo will teach you, it's his idea.

She'd gotten online. She hadn't been lying, and he didn't have to teach her to use a mouse. Thank god. He didn't know if he could have handled a complete incompetent today. He was so relieved that it took him a moment to really process the question. She was actually asking him how he'd talked the guy into it.
Indigo cleared his throat and got a little more attentive. He gave a couple quick instructions before speaking. "I came in for a job and my selling point was going to be wizard who knows internet. He didn't know what I was talking about, but he asked if he should. Somehow I ended up selling him on how much business he'd get from Muggle-friendly people at the school. We get a lot of people in here who don't have any better way to keep in touch with Muggle friends and family. They'll get online, send some messages, then get something to eat and drink and stay for another half hour." It worked. Indigo pointed at a sign on the wall above the computers, far more noticeable than the Free WiFi signs.
No food or drink in this area.
He'd advised it to keep the equipment cleaner, but it had definitely worked out. College students couldn't sit around smelling coffee and hot food too long without getting desperately hungry. It meant they bought food, and they didn't have to set timers on the computers. Yet.

"Impressive," Hayden said. She brought one leg up to prop her heel on the front edge of her seat. Pecking out a key at a time would probably annoy the guy, she'd noticed that people who really liked this kind of thing hated it, but she could at least get around a little. "I'd heard up at the university he was pretty open-minded sometimes, still didn't think he'd take me or let there be a muggle invasion."

"Yeah, really open-minded," Indigo said. "He looks uptight, but it's just business." Indigo glanced around, but there was no one at the other computers who might overhear. He dropped his voice anyway. "You didn't hear this from me, but he's pretty notorious for ah..." Indigo paused, trying to think of a nice way to say it, then gave up and went ahead. "He'll do anything that holds still long enough," he finished.
"Or he used to. Anyway he likes people who stand out and... who look good." If he blushed a little at knowing he included himself, it probably wasn't visible considering how blotchy his face was anyway.
"You've got to be able to work, though. Follow the rules, be professional, and this is a decent place. He doesn't tolerate a~holes so if anyone jerks you around just tell a manager and it'll actually get taken care of.

That meant a lot, though she wasn't about to go into any details about why it was nice to be somewhere where those in charge would take care of things. "I think I can manage to follow the rules when I'm surrounded by gorgeous people," Hayden teased. Indigo looked like he hadn't been having the best of times, and she figured there wasn't anything wrong with a little innocent flirting. It wasn't like she expected or wanted anything out of it, it was just words.

Indigo smiled reflexively, though it didn't last nearly long enough. The reflex to think about Jory, to remind himself it was all okay because he knew it wouldn't go anywhere, brought a sharp, stabbing pain to his chest. His gaze dropped to his lap and that didn't help either. He'd imagined a ring so many times, just testing the thought, that it was like a sucker-punch just seeing his own hands.
He pulled a breath. "Okay, I'm going to show you how to check the WiFi signal," he decided Business. Business would keep him from breaking down in public.

Hayden raised an eyebrow at Indigo, but accepted the switch. They weren't supposed to be chatting, anyway, he was supposed to be training her. "Lead the way, I'm a quick learner," she promised, then shifted to the side enough that he could get access to the computer himself if needed. Her parents would bleeding freak if they saw her sitting at this muggle thing, if they had any freaking out left in them after all the other sh~ she'd put them through. "How often are you here, or is there a backup tech guy?"

"I'm it," Indigo said. "I'm on call in case of emergencies, but it'll usually be really basic stuff. Someone saves files to the desktop that need cleared off, someone can't figure out why there's no sound, someone forgets it's not like firecalling and tries to stick his head in the screen.
"Most of the time you won't have to worry about it. Whoever opens turns everything on, it gets checked during slow times, and whoever closes turns it all back off. Sometimes you'll get someone who's got no idea how to use any of this and wants to learn. They don't always want to hear it, but I have to be here for lessons like that. My schedule's posted in the back. Just tell them when I'll be in, write me a note, and stick it by my schedule."

"Aye-aye, captain," Hayden said with a little mock salute of a couple fingers to her forehead. "It must be a nightmare, like trying to teach a muggle potions or something. You're a student, too, right?" Even though she'd been on campus for a year already, she was far from knowing everyone in the school even by sight. She hadn't even bothered trying at her old school, which in all honesty had made leaving it a lot easier and more fun.

"Yeah," Indigo said. "My parents are Muggles and they got potions right away. It's cooking with magic. Who taught you to use a computer?" he asked. Considering the hell he went through instructing people on mouse-usage, she ought to remember any trouble she'd had. Or maybe she'd learned from a professional. He'd grown up with computers. It all made sense to him.
