Skylar was surprised that he hadn't gotten more attention walking down the streets of the little Muggle town. He was used to attention and, though his usual black denim and leather were at home, he was wearing wizards' robes. They were relatively new, deepest black that shone slightly in the dimming light of early evening. Crisp white gleamed at his wrists and collar, and though he hadn't removed any jewelry, though a tattoo fanned across the side of his neck, he looked respectable.
His hair was smoothed back, all except a bit that refused to stay off his face for more than a few minutes at a time. He'd decided not to fight it. He had more important things to think about than the state of his hair. A certain Society Miss, for example.
Mano Berwyn's little sister.
He'd have liked her even without that knowledge, of course. She was a model of feminine beauty, something he was drawn to despite whatever people might think. Though Charlotte wasn't on his mind, she'd been the same. Curvier, a different face, a different voice and open attitude, but feminine from the smooth motions of her hips to the perfect curls of hair that fell around her shoulders. His parents had trained him well, at least in that which he hadn't realized he'd been trained. Jessica might have made him a good wife if she hadn't wanted someone else. And if his f~ing parents had told him that they'd destroy any other marriage he attempted.
He stood in a unique place, socially. His family had existed on the outer edges of Society for ages without attempting to better itself. Land had been sold for debts owed due to drinking, gambling, whoring, and any number of other things, and somehow it had been done so that he'd been in a position to get it all back. And no one had told him. He'd never realized that he'd been raised to marry up. Who raised their son that way? It was daughters who were primped and perfected, made beautiful so that some wealthier wizard might take her off her parents' hands.
Not that he'd been primped, and not that he was pretty. He knew the rules, though. He knew them and he discarded them because what was the point in giving your life to something you didn't enjoy? Except that he might enjoy it. He might, and he was friends with a chunk of the elite now. Michael hadn't shut him out when he'd nearly broken and the others accepted him without question. At least to his face.
It was seven o'clock precisely when he knocked on the door of Lani's residence. He smoothed his robes, then looked out over the darkening street.

Cat opened the door and looked over the man standing on the doorstep. Lani was free to make her own choices without any influence from him, but he at least wanted to know what the guy looked like. Lani had been quiet and more or less kept to herself for almost a year. She'd only just started university and had come back from town with books and a date. She was a pretty thing, but way too innocent. And this guy looked damn serious.
When his gaze reached the man's eyes again, Cat extended his hand. "Caspian Catalyst," he said. "I'm Lani's roommate. And you are..."

"Skylar Constantine." One dark brow arched slightly as he accepted that handshake with a firm one of his own. This kid looked like Dare on some kind of hallucinogenic potion. The people Lani lived with were not like him. "No, thanks, I'll wait out here." He didn't intend to go in and be inspected under better lighting, if that's what this was. He wouldn't be giving the man any fuel other than his name.

Cat had only intended to be polite, not to take photos and fingerprints. "Suit yourself," he said and closed the door. "Lani! He's here!" Cat went back to the couch and the school work he had scattered over the coffee table. He didn't have time for Mister Too-Cool. He hoped Lani didn't fall for that sh~.

In the short couple of days since setting up this date, excitement had managed to grow, and Lani hadn't been able to resist sending out an owl or two to a couple of her friends. Yes, she was excited. Although Skylar was far from a traditional partner, he was handsome, and wasn't the whole running away thing about new experiences, anyway? The responses she'd gotten had dipped from caution and wariness into thinly veiled excitement that would be more at home in a schoolgirl's diary.
She made her way down the steps, her feet covered in soft flats that barely touched each stair as it passed. While pale colors and earth tones were typically her family signature, Lani had opted instead for color this time, and when she stopped herself at the bottom of the staircase her flowing red dress attempted to continue on before settling around her ankles. Her hair was in a more typical fashion, up with a few drifting tendrils around her face and neck, but dangling earrings and a lip color that, she thought, pleasingly paired with her dress seemed to scream her independence.
"What do you think?" she asked, looking to Cat for his opinion. Evelyn was out of the house, for which Lani was grateful, but she wanted at least some kind of opinion before stepping over the threshold.

Cat gave a quick glance over his shoulder that turned into a double-take. While he wasn't the type to gawk at someone attractive, that didn't stop the surprise. Red. On Lani. "You look good," he said, and pushed at his fringe as he stood. "Evelyn talked to you about like, birds and bees crap—stuff—right?" Watching Miss Oh-So-Proper leave with Mister Smooth was one thing, but this was more like Miss Grab-Life-by-the-Balls. Was some big Society douche going to come after him for allowing this?

"I'm certain I can handle a date, Cat," Lani said. Yes, she'd spoken with Evelyn, and between that and her experiences with Eros, she was confident that she could manage a couple of hours with a man. She reached up to make sure her earrings were hanging correctly, and when she spoke her voice was low. "I've never been on a date before. Eros doesn't count."

"Sh~." Cat didn't catch his swear that time, but it was as low as Lani's words. "A lot of dates end up in bed," he told her. At least, most of the dates he went on. "If you want him to respect you, hold out at least like three dates. At least." Preferably until she'd decided whether to throw her old life in the trash or not.

Lani's eyes widened slightly, but after more or less a year of living together she wasn't exactly scandalized. "For your information, I do not intend on falling into bed with him," she said, smoothing her dress, which simply settled again after her hands passed. "For all I know I'll never even see him again, we are only having dinner."

Cat might have laughed, but the Lani he'd come to know was showing perfectly well now in a moment of surprise followed immediately by prim words and self-conscious preening. She'd loosened up a little since they'd met, but obviously wasn't to the point of free love and whatever feels good that summed up a lot of people who came through his house. Cat didn't argue, didn't push the warning.
"Have a good time then," he said. He fully intended to give the guy on the porch a look over Lani's shoulder when she left.

"That is my intention," Lani said, then glanced at her reflection in the nearest piece of glass to make sure she was presentable. A deep breath and a correction of posture later, she opened the door with a small smile on her face to greet her suitor. "Oh my," she said at her first sight of him, "you look quite handsome." Certainly different from their meeting in the bookshop.

"And you are stunning," Skylar returned with a brief nod of his head. He ignored the glowering scene-kid monolith in the background and moved to take Lani's hand. He could manage a bow without too much mocking in it, and if his finger slipped lightly into the soft center of her palm as he kissed her knuckles, it was purely accidental. The slow rise to straight posture gave him ample opportunity to consider her dress and the figure which lay beneath it. The latter was shown quite well while the former attempted to pretend modesty. Except for the color. Skylar had the thought that this would be quite an evening. His hand slipped past her long enough to pull the door closed and, as he placed her arm atop his, the sun slipped beneath the horizon.

Lani could barely believe that she was heading off to a restaurant with a man without her parents' supervision. Even with Eros, this had hardly been a possibility, at least until the last time she had seen him. She pushed that memory firmly away. "I do believe my house-mates are worried about this date," she commented, "but I see no reason to be. I mean, I met you in a book shop, of all places."

Skylar's lips quirked slightly in secret amusement. The first time he'd been in a book store for as long as he could remember, and she was using it as proof that he was... what, safe? His eyes glittered as he looked down at her. "And we're going to a restaurant," he said. "It's not as though I'm taking you down some back alley to have my nefarious way." No, they were simply going to walk together down darkened streets, enjoy a candlelit dinner, then walk the darkened streets again together, likely with some wine in their blood.

A soft laugh escaped from Lani's throat as she walked with Skylar. "I somehow doubt that that is your plan," she said. "I've been living with, shall we say, alternative people for the past year. I've learned not to judge people based on how they look." It was quite the change, considering her life until then had been based on, among other things, how a person looked.
