What should I do about Jory?
Five rare jade runes lay in the shape of a cross, and Jai pored over them. He'd concentrated on his question the best he could, but a little alcohol was already filtering its way through him and he really just wanted to forget. Answers first, he'd told himself.
A reversed Thurisaz was the past. Barriers had been avoided, or hadn't held. He could reach his goal. That was his past, no doubt of it. The present was a reversed Perth. Secrets revealed, don't take chances. Well, he'd already screwed that one up.
What was working for him, though? Another reversed rune, Uruz. He was either prepared for the challenge or there wasn't one. It might appear hopeless, but he could do it. His heart lifted a bit. Algiz was reversed, too. Failed defense, failure, lack of effort. But what was he supposed to do?
Gebo, which couldn't be reversed, symbolized friendship, gifts, and unions. Yes.

Dismas had found the boy at the club, looking distressed and lost, and trying to find out where Jai lived. No one could tell him, of course. That wasn't public information. People who wished to find him or Jai were typically directed toward the club. There had been some brief conversation, if one could call it that. The boy had cried and given a rather choppy version of things in the hopes that Dismas would point him in the right direction.
In the end, of course, he'd agreed to take the boy home. Jai was his first concern, and if his Sunrise was suffering in mourning or guilt of some sort, perhaps both wizards could be helped. He gathered the boy for apparition.
Once there, Dismas led the way in. Jai wasn't at all difficult to find. He was in the living room, bent over his stones with a bottle of some alcoholic drink that Dismas hadn't known was in the house. He picked it up and left the two youths to their conversation.

Jai didn't argue when Dismas took his booze. He did look up though, and his gaze stuck on Jory. Gebo, a gift. If this was what it looked like, he'd never done a reading this good in his life. Jai looked back down at his runes, as though they might say something different this time. He couldn't think of a thing to say.

Jory sank into the nearest seat, and Astra settled her head on his knee. His face felt puffy and swollen, and he barely even cared about whether or not it looked as bad as it felt. It wasn't fair for him to come to Jai after what had happened, but he couldn't think of where else to go. The parents would be stifling, and Dare would just be embarrassing. "So I think I'm single now," he said after too long. The stones on the table caught his eye, though he spared them little more than a superficial glance.

There was a deep silence in the room after that confession. Then Jai pushed aside the cross spread and pulled a single rune from a black velvet bag. Is this my fault?
Inguz. Jai's brows drew together. Completion. Sexuality. The challenge and rewards of bringing together things that complemented each other. The twin strands of life.
Jai dropped the rune and pulled a quick breath. "I'm sorry," he said. He shouldn't have pulled that last rune. This was too much to know.

Jory stared at the dropped rune, though his gaze remained mostly blank. There were more tears to come, he was sure, but he was tired of it already. "It's not your fault," he said. "It was all my decisions." The wrong ones, which was really just his life in a nutshell, as far as he could tell. "I'm sorry I came here, I just...didn't know where else to go."

Jai shook his head. "No, you can... you can stay here if you want." In my room. In my bed.
Completion. A gift.
He'd wanted something like the runes were telling him this was all his life. So why was he afraid? I just want to have fun. Jai didn't want to consult the runes again, didn't want to ask and didn't want to find out. But what if he was just overreacting? What if this was only his imagination?
Is Jory my fate?
Ken, reversed. Information being withheld. Things not visible. He gave up. He stood. "Come with me," he said, and nodded his head toward a hallway, beyond which lay his bedroom. He couldn't think right now, even if that had only gotten him in trouble earlier.

Two and a half years with Indigo. Countless I love yous. And he was standing to follow Jai with a silent nod. Astra stood to follow, but after a hand motion she settled down again, watchful eyes tracking his movement. "Lead the way," he said. He knew where this was leading, and despite how surreal all of this still was, he couldn't summon any resistance.

Jai led Jory to his bedroom without any real hurry and closed the door behind them. Should he be doing this? Was he doing it because of the runes he'd been reading? No. When they'd been on that playground together they'd talked and talked and Jory had kissed him and it was all good until it had ended. He flicked a glance at Jory. Was that going to happen again? If so, maybe he ought to just go back to the club and find someone to spend the night with.
"Do you really want to?" he asked softly. He wanted to, he wanted to forget and to pretend he meant something more to someone than rock star for a while, even if it was probably just another night together.

"You know," Jory said when he finally looked at Jai after procrastinating by looking around the room, his voice still low. "You stopped me from being scared of men, when we first met. I hadn't been with anyone in like two years." Were it not for Jai, he might never have been with Indigo, a recurring thought now. "And when I got with Indigo, I remember thinking that it meant I could never be with you again." There, he'd admitted it.

Jai looked up, stunned. He'd done that? One night, one night when he'd pulled a cute brunette. They'd talked a little, and Jory had hesitated, hadn't he? It was hard to tell if he was remembering Jory or someone else, but he thought it was Jory. No, it was. He'd used his dog as an excuse. Jai looked at the door. Probably the same dog that was out there right now. They'd spent the night together and he'd talked about the guy with Sunset for the next week.
Barriers hadn't held. Secrets revealed. A challenge. Failed defenses. A gift.
Jai stood for a moment, then stepped closer to Jory, close enough to feel the heat between their bodies. I told Sunset about you. He couldn't say it. He could kiss Jory, though.

Jory tilted his chin up to meet Jai in the middle and lifted a hand to rest against the side of Jai's neck. It was only a matter of time before the tragedy of the night came crushing down on him again, so he might as well make the most out of this strange intermission. He could mourn later when it all felt real. Right now, little felt real except for the body heat in front of him.

The rest was a blur. It was exactly what Jai wanted, what he needed, and though Jory's confessions could have crushed him, the only ache he felt was desperation. He didn't want to think, so he let thought go and immersed himself in heat and pleasure. When it was over, he fell back beside Jory, panting. God, he'd needed that.

Everything about it had been different from the past years with Indigo, and it was difficult to decide if that had made it better or if it was a horrible thing. Was it possible for both to be true? His limbs were wonderfully relaxed and after twice in such a short amount of time, plus all of the emotional upheaval, he was exhausted. Sadly, that only gave him the chance to think about the fact that he no longer had Indigo.
Sleeping with Jai was like accepting that fact, accepting he wasn't going to fight for Indigo. Giving in, giving up, taking a chance. Making a mistake, making the right choice. He didn't know. He lay back and closed his eyes tightly. "Thanks for letting me stay." It was safer than saying anything floating through his mind.

"Yeah," Jai breathed. He stared sightlessly at the ceiling, blissfully tired and finally wiped of any real thought. When he closed his eyes at last, he fell into a deep sleep filled with dreams he'd never recall.
