"I'm still coming to terms with it, is all," Jory said. It was kind of pathetic, since he'd shown his first signs like three or four years ago, but he couldn't help it. "I never thought of my future job or whatever. I was kind of lame, really, and pretty much just thought about relationship stuff." Only minimal thought led to him reaching up for a bar above his head and pulling himself up.

"Aw, that's not lame," Jai said. He didn't go on, though. Instead he sat nearby on a faded metal merry-go-round. He set the snacks down next to him and moved a little from side to side with his feet. "Cat's still not thinking about jobs and he's totally got his sh~ together." As for Jai himself, he didn't spend much time thinking about the future.
"You can't totally live for the future anyway," he said, tearing open a package of M&M's. "I mean, if you're always looking forward you're missing what's going on now, right?"

"Maybe that's where I've been going wrong," Jory considered. "Everyone always says you're supposed to know what you wanna do." Where do you see yourself in five years? and all those other kinds of questions that expected everyone to know exactly who they'd be in a decade. "But I screw up when I think of right now, too. What, you don't have any plans for later?" Most people weren't rock stars for their whole lives.

Jai grinned and shook his head. "Maybe the Billywigs'll end up like the Weird Sisters. We'll be like middle-aged and still getting more ass than a toilet seat." That suited him just fine. "Besides, Dismas is like a hundred and he says not to worry about it. Life's short, and crap. Well it is for us."

Jory laughed lightly and shrugged as he settled himself for a moment on a high bar. "I had a granddad who lived to be like 140 something. I think that's pretty good for someone who isn't immortal," he said. He rarely, if ever, thought about death, it was just too depressing and he enjoyed life way too much to worry about it. "And hey, if your group is still going when we're 50, I'll come see a concert."

"You do that," Jai said. He tipped the bag up and emptied a nice bit of candy into his mouth. Fifty. He couldn't really imagine being that old. Being a fat, poorly-aged fifty year old didn't sound nearly as cool as just being a singer forever. He swallowed and washed the chocolate down with more soda.
"My parents are Muggles," he said. "They've got maybe twenty years left, some crap like that. I don't know if I'll make it to forty. A hundred and forty just sounds crazy."

"Mine are magic, but my brother's a squib, dunno how that works out, though," Jory said, swinging backwards to hang by his knees. "I guess another century just means we have plenty of time to be perfect at what we like." A century. Longer, maybe. That seemed like an impossible amount of time. "Why do you think you won't make it?"

Jai shrugged and looked away. "Maybe I just don't want to," he said. He stopped the side to side motion of his feet and scuffed his heel in a smooth groove of dirt that had probably taken a decade to make. "I don't want to get old. I..." Maybe he wanted to stay where he was, or how he was. Or maybe just a little longer. Maybe when the Billywigs were so big he couldn't walk around without people recognizing him, maybe then things would be perfect. Jai shook his head at himself.

Jory twisted slightly to look over at Jai, then pulled himself up to untangle himself and drop to the sandy floor beneath the bar with a soft thump. "I don't think anyone wants to, it's just something that happens, and it doesn't mean you have to act any different," he said. "You could be the coolest forty year old ever." As he walked over, he reached up to attempt smoothing hair that had flopped up while he was upside down, only to have half of it refuse to lay down.

Jai watched Jory idly. He still wasn't convinced. Once you got old you were supposed to start thinking about family and crap, weren't you? He wasn't interested in any of that. He was interested in being hot and young, being wanted. He eyed Jory, wanting a change of subject, and finally thought of one.
"Hey, have you ever been on one of these before?" he asked. He shifted the merry-go-round from side to side again.

Jory shook his head and let out a light laugh. "No. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, Jai, I played in trees and with like...bowtruckles." Most people had no idea what his life had been like before heading off to school, especially those who met him after his transfer to Hogwarts. Who would expect that the somewhat flamboyant kid with a ton of piercings spent most of his childhood halfway up a tree?

"Then you've got to try it," Jai decided. He stood up and started moving their snacks and drinks out of the way, then grabbed onto one of the bars. "This is how Muggle kids play. Get up here," he said. "Sit down in the middle and kind of brace yourself. Hold onto these things. They're like up there with swings on best playground stuff ever."

Although Jory raised an eyebrow first at the odd-looking thing and then at Jai, he did as he was told. "So, what, it just spins?" he asked as he wrapped his arms around two of the bars. Why would spinning around in a circle be fun? Did it even count as a circle if he was in the middle and never actually moved from where he started?

Jai grinned. "Yeah, it just spins," he said with a chuckle. "Close your eyes." He got into position, taking a deep breath and stretching forward to get the best reach. Then he gave a sharp pull and threw the bar behind him, sending the thing spinning in flashes of shadow-muted green, yellow, red and blue. He stuck his hands in with practiced ease as though he'd never stopped playing to keep it going faster and faster, until it was going as fast as his arms could manage.

Jory did as he was told, and soon his head was spinning and he dropped his head completely out of his own willpower, and all he could think about was the swooshing in his brain. Before then, he'd never known brains could swoosh. "Oh my god, Jai," he managed, then realized he'd spoken through laughter. He'd kissed another guy, got in a fight with his boyfriend, and was being spun into insanity on a muggle children's toy, and he was laughing.
