Astra was excited to have been brought along to a new place, even if every bit of the island was still a new place, technically. Her tail swished and she panted happily as she walked alongside Jory. Jory, on the other hand, was more than a little apprehensive about this visit. Nothing of note had happened since Indigo's visit and that almost made him want to avoid coming to see Madame Magadia. He'd sworn he would come, though, and though it had taken a couple of days to convince himself to just do it, here he was, knocking on her door.

"Enter," called a voice from within. Dayea waved her hand over the crystal she'd been reading, and the light in the center flashed once before dimming to a soft glow. Her Divining room had a door to the outside, and one to the rest of the house, as well as a curving staircase along the outer wall. It didn't lead to a tower, not in Valfirid, but it was high enough to consult the stars when needed.
The room was neither large nor small, but felt close. Most of the light came from a fireplace, over which hung a small cauldron, and candles of various colors and sizes placed on tables and shelves. Heavy red curtains were pulled across some things, hiding more shelves here or a window there, but interspersed with them were strips of gauzy cloth in jewel tones, amethyst, turquoise, and topaz. Strings of dried herbs and flowers hung over the fireplace, and the room was gently perfumed, seductive, relaxing but not drowsy.
Jars held some things which were easy to identify, mostly fresh potions ingredients and various things for divination, and some things which were shrouded in shadow or sheer cloths. A set of drawers stood to one side, near the staircase, its mirror covered in a swath of red, its top displaying a squat, round, terracotta vase with a ring of markings around it, a small bowl of water, and three vials.
Even to the experienced, the room was a masterpiece of mystery. Its walls seemed impervious to the outside world, or perhaps the walls contained a kind of ethereal magic that the world was not ready for. It was why Dayea preferred to meet students here, on her own grounds, rather than at the school.
She stood from her place at a round table draped with red. The crystal ball held a place of honor in the center, but a stack of cards sat within hand's reach. "I knew that it was you," she said. "The crystal told me."

Jory came in and put a calming hand on Astra to keep her from investigating too enthusiastically. "I'd have come yesterday but I was still getting settled in and everything," he said. Well, it was partially true, at least. He glanced around, noting the things he recognized and moving on, his eyes lingered on things he was unfamiliar with.

Dayea didn't believe the boy for a moment, but didn't waste her breath arguing either. It was a good enough excuse, and an attempt to be polite. "Would you like your dog to be trained?" she asked, getting down to business. She would prefer that the animal be out of the way, as she had no particular love for them herself and they tended to be distracting. "I have someone who will care for it while we work."

"Yeah, I think so," Jory said, looking down at Astra. "It's better than chancing being alone if it happens again." He could still hope a little that it might have been a fluke and wouldn't actually happen again. He knew it was just lying to himself, but it made him feel slightly better to hope. "I didn't know dogs could sense that kind of thing."

"Not all of them can," Dayea said, "but I get a good feeling from this one." She walked toward the door that led into the house and opened it by hand. A few brief words and another young woman appeared, far more modestly dressed than Dayea.
"You have heard of zoomancy?" Dayea asked as the other woman knelt and greeted the dog. "Zoomancy is divination by animals, Haruspex by the entrails of sacrifice, Hepatoscopy by livers, Augery by the behavior of living animals. Some animals are more reliable than others and have more magic of their own, but nearly all have some sense of it. Your Astra will have lessons of her own while we talk. No harm will come to her." Jory seemed a nervous young man, and in need of the assurance.

Astra reacted well to the other woman and, after very little hesitation, Jory handed over the leash. "She normally learns quickly, so I'm sure she'll do well," he said. He was pretty sure that Astra actually liked learning new things, so this would be as much a treat as anything else for her. Plus, he had to admit he liked the fact that both of them were going to be having lessons.

When the woman and the dog had gone and the door was once again closed, Dayea turned back to Jory. "What I wish to discuss is the prophecy," she said, and held up a hand to silence any protests which might have come. "It will wait," she went on. "First we must clear our minds. Sit," she said, gesturing to one of four chairs which circled her table. "Tell me about your visions. Tell me your worries, Jory. Free them so that you may breathe." She took her own seat.

"This is the first time a vision has been anything near serious," Jory said once he'd sat. "I'm scared of seeing something happening to my family or my friends." So he'd turned more attention to Astronomy. It wasn't that he'd disliked Astronomy in the past, it had always been one of his favorite facets of Divination, but it had definitely gotten more focus over the past months.

"Visions are not fortune-telling," Dayea said. "You will not see all things, and you will not know all things. Visions may not always be trusted. They will tell the truth, yes, but you will not know when you have a vision whether your interpretation is correct. If you see something, Jory, you are seeing but a piece of a far larger moment. Who knows what happens after? Who knows what came before?"

That wasn't as reassuring as it was likely meant to be. He could only imagine being even more frustrated if he saw something horrible happening and had no idea what the context was. "Maybe I'll feel better about it later, once I've learned more," he said. He'd have to, wouldn't he? Surely he couldn't live out the rest of his life slightly afraid all the time.

"Yes," Dayea said softly. "Maybe." She reached for her cards and pulled one from the top of her well-shuffled pile. Knight of Cups. A passionate romantic, prone to extremes. Forceful idealism, forceful with emotions and tender in the support of others. Her lips curved. He would do well. He only needed some confidence and direction. She slid the card to the bottom of the deck and looked across at Jory.
"What is your preferred method of Divination?" she asked. "Mine are crystals and tarot, but I am familiar with all kinds. What seems most reliable to you?"

"I like tarot and cards, it's more or less the first one I tried, so I'm most comfortable with it," Jory said. "I love Astronomy, but it's not quite so exact. I haven't been able to branch out as much as I'd like, I'd like to try out things that aren't really taught in school. I like runes, too." He really liked a bit of everything, which was a large part of why he wanted to try out other styles.

"I will teach you many things," Dayea assured him. "You are enrolled in Basic Divination? It is not the same as school. You will learn many different types. We will spend more time on those which call to you, and to others." There would, of course, be some who tried to get her to teach them Orpi, but she would make no sacrifices for students' amusement.
"Have you brought cards?" she asked curiously. She hadn't told him to bring anything besides the dog, but she wondered if he had hunches and instincts to go with his blossoming visions.

Jory's eyebrows creased and he nodded. "Yeah," he said, shifting to pull an old worn deck from his pocket. At one point he'd carried the deck with him almost constantly and its darkened edges gave away the hours of handling. "I've had this deck for years, I got it right when I started Divination, actually." It wasn't anything special and he had other decks now, but he'd never had the heart to throw it away. It was bound in a stiff cloth-bound wrap that buttoned to hold it closed.
