Dayea's lips curved at his happiness. A flick of her wand and a small tray appeared, with two butterbeers and a saucer of chocolate pieces. "We have used a great deal of energy," she explained. "Please, help yourself." She was more used to the rigors of marathon seeing, but Jory, who had fought his powers for nearly a year, needed fuel to go on.

Jory automatically reached for the chocolate, even if he wasn't feeling the effects just yet. Adrenaline was likely keeping it at bay. "Thank you," he said. "What else were we going to do?" He wouldn't have expected to be eager to continue, but he couldn't help it. This was exciting now that whatever it was had clicked in his mind.

"We will consult the crystal ball," Dayea said. "We have learned much about a man, one filled with avarice and greed who plays at being charming. Maybe we will see his face?" Maybe they would see the owner of that pale blue eye. She suspected they were one and the same.
Dayea stood and approached the shelves where crystal balls waited on stands. Some were so clear they might have been invisible, others made of colored stone. Some were quite large, and others could fit in the palm of a hand. She concentrated and let them speak to her, finally selecting one of a moderate size, a smooth, slightly smoky quartz which could only just be seen through. Her wand sent it and its stand to the table.
She opened a set of drawers nearby which contained small gemstones of all colors nested in velvet. A moment's thought and she selected two stones. The first was lapis lazuli, royal blue with flecks of gold. The second was an iridescent green-grey which shone blue or yellow in the mellow candlelight. This one she set in front of Jory.
"The stones will help us to focus," she said. "They will increase our power. We will view the crystal together." They would likely see different things, but there was a chance, if the prophecy had left pieces of itself within Jory's mind, that they could find something extraordinary.
"Your stone is labradorite," she said. "It is a power stone. It will allow you to see through illusions and will strengthen your intuitions." Her own was far more powerful and required care and skill which Jory had yet to master. If she slipped into a trance, she could become a channel.
"Hold the stone in your hand, like this," she said, curling her fingers gently around the lapis. "Do you feel anything?"

Jory reached for the stone and at first, there was nothing. "Not really..." he said, looking down at the stone. He turned his thoughts back to the prophecy, even if he only knew very little. The words played through his head along with the two brief flashes he remembered. A dull throbbing started somewhere behind his ears, not a painful sensation, but a little unpleasant. "There's some pressure in my head, but I'm not seeing anything."

"Then we consult the crystal," Dayea said. "The stones amplify, Jory. They do not work on their own. Come, sit beside me and we will gaze. Clear your mind of thoughts this time. It is a meditation, crystal-gazing. Allow yourself to see through it, let the plays of light through the ball make you drowsy. If you see images deep inside the crystal, do not focus sharply. Let them come to you." She spoke low and increasingly slowly, setting both of them toward a lull, a light trance.

Jory moved to sit by her and rested his hands on the table, worrying the stone slightly as he looked into the crystal ball. It was difficult to clear his mind after the intensity of their conversation and other readings. From his own experience, he didn't expect to see anything in the crystal immediately, it usually took him time to be able to see anything.

Dayea was in no hurry. Classes would begin after the weekend, and so she knew he had time. The room itself helped in relaxation; it was dim and quiet, without distraction. Jory's mind had been wound tightly, prodded until his inner eye had awakened properly. Only the calming crackle of the fire, the soft scent of herbs and dried flowers, the smooth stones in their palms and the lingering taste of chocolate tickled the physical senses. None were distractions.
"Let your breathing slow," Dayea said, her voice soft and mellow. "Note the colors of light reflecting deep inside the crystal. Let your eyelids droop."

Jory counted as he breathed, just a little helper to get his mind to clear. In, two, three, four. Out, two, three, four. Controlling his breathing slowly calmed his body and the energy coursing through him and his eyes slipped a little out of focus. There were flickers of shapes in the crystal, but they were so undefined they might as well have been puffs of smoke.

It was quiet for some minutes after that. Dayea could feel Jory relaxing beside her and allowed herself to slip into a trance of her own. She had practiced for years to reach that meditative state so quickly, and though the room had yet to absorb her energies, the objects within knew her well. The only interference she might have gotten would have been from the boy at her side, if he was not radiating the same energy she was.
Black. Black was never a good sign. She didn't want to acknowledge it, but it began to form a shape, one which moved slowly, sleek as a cat. Cat. Yes. She encouraged the shape to grow and saw the form of a black cat, a large one. She saw the rosettes of a jaguar against human skin.
The cat will meet the halfblood, a catalyst to great events and terrible, she murmured. She was only just aware of herself enough that she might remember the words later. Rigorous training had taught her that balance between self-awareness and pure thought.

Jory heard Magadia at his side, but kept his unfocused attention on the crystal. The throbbing pressure behind his ears returned. He disliked the pressure but didn't fight it, wondering, if it was part of his own powers, if it would manage to help the crystal provide more answers. His fingers tightened around the stone in his hands, using it as an anchor and a link.

Dayea was absorbing power not only from the stone in her hand, but the boy at her side. She'd wanted to draw the prophecy from him, to see if he worked with the crystal as well as the cards, but she had lost herself instead.
Within the crystal, a flash of orange took over the black. She saw that pale blue eye, the one concentrating so hard, saw flashes of red and light.
"Ginger hair will fly and blood will fall as brother meets brother, man meets beast, and the young voice of justice calls evil from the shadows... a grudge comes to term, family torn in two... the halfblood rises to seek his destiny... The cat will meet the halfblood..."

The additional information was enough to break Jory's concentration and he was looking over at Magadia before he even had a thought to try to focus again. He didn't like the extra bits of prophecy she was speaking. It wasn't enough to send him into a panic this time, but he felt uneasy. He wanted to speak, but had the feeling that interrupting a prophecy would likely not be a good idea.

Dayea felt a jolt from Jory, and the fragile balance of her trance cracked. She pulled a deep breath and reached blindly for her wand, summoning a quill and a bit of parchment. She held tightly to the connection and wrote without opening her eyes, hardly aware of the motions until she was finished.
When her eyes opened, they were hazy and she seemed surprised to see Jory beside her. She was used to seeking such deep answers alone. Still, she recalled herself quickly and smoothed out the written prophecy between them.
"Here it is," she said softly. "Ah, you are very good, you got most of the important parts. This was your first prophecy?" she asked, looking aside with vague admiration. "Very good."

"As far as I know, it was my first," Jory said. He couldn't think of any time in the past that could have contained one. "I'm sorry I got distracted, I didn't expect to hear all of that." The look she'd given him was one he was unused to having and he pulled his eyes away to look down at the paper. He felt much more subdued now, with evil written from his own prophecy.

"It is your first time," Dayea said comfortingly. "This is a full prophecy, do you see? This line repeated at the end, it is the most important. Some seers repeat the prophecy in its entirety, but I find it more helpful when this occurs."
The cat will meet the halfblood.
