Dayea was visibly pleased at this news, and with a flick and swish of her wand moved her crystal ball to a shelf of other crystals of various sizes and colors. The light within faded, then went out.
"We will read one another," Dayea suggested. "You read your deck, I read my tarot. We will see how the cards like you." She began to shuffle her deck. "Ah, one last thing," she said, as though it was an afterthought. "Think of the day we met. Think of what your mind is drawn to remembering, and allow yourself to remember it."

Jory slowly unpacked his cards and shuffled them. They were so broken in they nearly bent fully in half when shuffled and bridged together. What did he remember? He remembered being afraid, surely, but he wasn't sure if his mind was drawn to it. His lips curved. Indigo. That was what his thoughts often returned to, even past the worry or fear. He straightened his cards and looked up to her, ready to follow her lead.

Dayea arched a brow at the smile she'd seen. Perhaps Jory's mind hadn't gone to the prophecy. She had thoughts, of course, but had only met him briefly and could not be certain. She placed her deck in the center of the table where he could reach them. "Cut my cards, please. Begin by thinking of the day as a whole, the feeling you get from it, then let your focus narrow. Take your time."

As a whole, the day had been wonderful. Jory had moved in and set up his room, Indigo had come to visit. Had the prophecy not marred the day it would have been just this side of perfect. His thoughts shifted as he cut the deck once, twice. The prophecy and Indigo fought for dominance but in the end, it was Indigo he thought of before sleeping, not the prophecy, no matter how much it was in his thoughts. To be fair, the movement forward of their relationship was just as big a deal for him as giving his first prophecy.

Dayea let her mind clear, let herself be receptive. She thought only of Jory, of that smile she'd seen and of what images floated across her inner eye. Then she lay out five cards from right to left: The Magician, The King of Wands, The Wheel of Fortune, The Page of Swords, and Aquarius, reversed. She began with the card on the right.
"This represents the object of your thoughts," she said. "The Magician means mastery over word, mind, and matter. It means the ability to act and to control one's life." Ah yes, he had great potential. "This second card is physical vision, its most base level. The King of Wands inspires others to rise to challenges with him." Perhaps the shy boy who'd watched so intently?
"This," she went on, touching the card in the middle, "is mental vision. The Wheel of Fortune is the path of destiny. Pay close attention to this card, Jory, and those which surround it. I see an unexpected turn of good fortune, a link in the chain of events." Perhaps the prophecy was a stepping stone to something greater?

Good fortune, that was good to hear. Jory tended to avoid doing readings for himself, he'd had enough bad fortune in the past that he didn't want to worry himself that it might come 'round again. For just a moment, he dared think that the prophecy might not be a bad thing, after all. He rested his hands against his own deck of cards as he listened and watched.

Dayea's hand moved toward the left, touching momentarily on the second to last card. "This is emotional vision," she said. "This is powerful for you. The cards do not say, but I know this. The Page of Swords represents this emotional vision. He is the essence of air behaving as earth, such as a steady wind. He is the approach of an unexpected challenge, to be met with clear thought and just action. You must have an eager appetite for these matters, gather information with unfaltering vigilance. Use reason to penetrate the veil of confusion and cut to the heart of the matter."

Jory shivered slightly, though he was unsure why. He never did well against challenges, he'd never quite lived up to his Gryffindor title whatever anyone might say. He always fell just short, when he wasn't crumbling to bits completely. Reason was another thing he was never all that good at. He pulled his eyes away from the cards on the table, to look at his hands.

Dayea noted Jory's reaction, and sighed inwardly. "The cards advise," she said gently. "They do not say that you will, but that you must. Use reason, they say, and you will meet the challenge. Recall the Magician, who says that you will succeed if you act. Recall the King who says that others will rise with you. You will not be alone, Jory. Take your courage from this, as the ones who follow will take courage from you. The Wheel says that this is your destiny, and that it will lead to success." If he acted. He needed only to act.

But he was never meant to be a leader! Jory nodded, anyway. "I just don't know how," he said when he forced himself to look up again. "I don't know why it chose me. Maybe that's one of the things I'm here to learn." He was still shaken from what had happened, but hopefully things would start to fall into place.

Dayea's lips curved slightly as she pointed to the last card, which had been drawn upside-down. "Aquarius agrees," she said. "Keep in mind The King of Wands, The Wheel of Fortune, and the Page of Swords as you look at him. This card is the fourfold, the mystical vision. He adds to the others, and reversed he is stubborn and contrary. He is detached and lacks sympathy, has contempt for the emotional needs of others.
"You see, perhaps, what he tells you?" Dayea tapped the card, but looked across the table at Jory. "The cards say that if you act, you will succeed. This card is your doubt. He is that part of you which puts your uncertainty first. Listen to him, and you know what will happen, don't you? Do not listen to him." She scooped the five cards up and put them back into her deck.
"When the time comes, you will feel it, and you will know." She shuffled her cards quickly, then began to lay them out again. "Will Jory be brave when he most needs to be?" she asked aloud. The cards made light slapping sounds as they met the tablecloth.
His attitude: Page of Coins, reversed. Delight in luxury and physical excess, irrationality and failure to recognize the obvious. Wastefulness, lack of focus.
The thoughts and feelings beneath his attitudes: Five of Coins. Hard times brought on by addiction or outside events. Rejection, loneliness, and the need for comfort.
Evolution of his attitude: King of Cups, reversed. The dark essence of water behaving as air, such as rain clouds in a gray sky. A pillar of maturity and patience, hiding a deep insecurity. One who secretly lusts for power, but lacks the courage or work ethic to take it. Selfishness. Unfaithfulness.
How others perceived his attitude: Virgo, reversed. Crippling shyness, timidity, and conservatism. The mind interfering with the heart, obsessive perfectionism and worry.
What he could not confront: Justice, reversed. Lack of balance, harmony, and integrity. The suspension of action until a decision is made. Unjust decisions and the consequences of those decisions. A turn for the worse in legal matters.
No, Dayea murmured to herself. "Is Jory capable of pushing past his fears? Is it possible?" she asked, scooping up her cards and shuffling fast as lightning. She lay out more as quickly as before.
The first possible outcome: Fame, reversed. Loss of identity, being surrounded by shallow admirers. False opportunities and being used for others' ambitions. Loneliness within the crows of humanity.
The second possible outcome: King of Swords: The essence of air, such as a clear blue sky. A mature leader of unwavering ethics and indisputable authority. An incorruptible judge, who cannot be swayed. Perfect clarity of thought. An inspirer of absolute trust and loyalty.
"It can go either way, you see," Dayea said. You will find loneliness and false opportunities, or that strength you doubt in yourself. You will fail, or become a leader. You can become," she said.
The force drawing him towards the first possible outcome: Justice, reversed: Lack of balance, harmony and integrity. The suspension of action until a decision is made. Yes, yes, she knew this. It made sense.
The force drawing him towards the second possible outcome: Seven of Cups, Temptation, reversed. Daydreams and fantasies brought into realistic focus. The contemplation of many options leading to a conclusive choice. Inner clarity that dissipates illusions and false choices. Remaining connected to reality in the face of intoxication, delirium, or hallucination. Rarely a failure to recognize a transcendental spiritual truth.
And finally, the critical factor that would decides what came to pass: Scorpio. A determined and forceful spirit, full of power and passion. An exciting and magnetic personality fueled by fiery emotions. Conversation that is direct and to the point, casting the world in black and white.
"Do you see these cards, Jory?" she asked. "Do you see the choice you have to make? Refusal to acknowledge your power will bring personal failure. Find that passion inside yourself, find that need to know more, and listen to it, and your success will bring success to others. Your doubt is crippling you; you are far greater than you realize!"

Jory stared at the cards, which gave the faintest glimmer of hope. Maybe more than a glimmer. The first reading had been his life laid bare, all of the worst truths listed out. Seeing it all so plainly, he hated it. He'd grown over the years, but it was all still there, maybe worse because he was aware of it now when he'd never been in the past.
A leader, inspirer, it didn't feel like him, but the cards said it could be him, if he would just reach for it. Maybe he could, maybe he should trust. Indigo called him brave, Jory had gotten a job at Hogwarts after being prefect, he'd been accepted to university, he was a Seer. He looked up across the table at her. "You'll help me?" he asked, then tapped the card giving him that horrid first outcome. "Because I do not want this. It isn't what I'm meant to be."

Dayea's concerned brow smoothed. "I will help you," she said, then looked once more to her cards. She moved them slower now, and placed each one gently. "Who will help Jory find his courage?" she asked. This spread was far larger, six cards surrounding a central seventh, with a line of three at the bottom. She pointed to the core of the circle first.
"This is the core of the situation. Four Anfore, Luxury, reversed. New and unusual relationships," she said, glancing across at him. "The reawakening of your appetite for life or love."

A short, light laugh escaped at that. "Indigo," Jory said. "Still new, and it's definitely been unusual." Less unusual now, or maybe it was unusual because it was such a normal relationship in comparison with the disasters he'd been involved with in the past. Love. He hadn't said it yet, but just now it felt more real than it had any other time he'd considered letting the words free.

A shadow of a smile curved Dayea's lips. The thought had come quickly to him, or perhaps he was simply more attuned. Either way, she wanted to coax that flicker of hope into a flame. She pointed to the card at the bottom of the circle next.
"This is something you did to bring about this situation. Seven Spade, Futility, reversed: Hopelessness," she suggested. "A feat of daring which was too much for you. Being caught in a desperate act." She wondered what this meant to Jory, but went on, touching the card at the bottom left next.
"Your beliefs," she said. "Ten Mazze, Opression: Success and gain, leading you to take on a burden greater than you can carry. Noble leadership transformed, through lack of restraint, into tyranny." She gave a teasing tsk. "Your doubts again," she said. "Ah, well, let us go on." She touched the card at the bottom right of the circle.
"This is the most likely outcome of the situation right now. This is changeable. Nine Anfore, Happiness, reversed: Conceit, and smugness in romance, friendship, or other relationships. Achieving what you always thought you wanted. Overindulgence. A simple warning," she explained. "Recall our other readings and think through things, even if this goes against habit. You can learn these things, Jory."
