Feat of daring. Could that be the first night Jory spent with Indigo? In a way it had been fueled by desperation and hopelessness, by things growing to be too much to stand. The last one was worrying, just a little. He didn't feel any of those things now, but it wasn't meant to be current, anyway. His eyes lit as a thought crossed his mind. "The doubts, when I'm fighting them," he said, looking up at Magadia again. "I can't go too far the other side, I have to balance it, right?"

"Yes," Dayea said, eyes glittering with encouragement. "Knowledge of the future can change how one acts. Have confidence, but do not act blindly." She looked at her cards again and touched the card at the upper left of the circle.
"This is the spiritual history of the situation. It is the things you've learned. Nine Mazze, Strength: A pause in the current struggle to ready yourself. Preparation to meet the conclusion. The steeling of the will to stand or fall. A line drawn in the sand." She smiled and went on to the card at the top of the circle.
"This is your spiritual task and the challenges of the present situation. Tulio, Strength: Raw power. A surge of tremendous force, recovery, victory after apprehension and fear. Delays and setbacks will be overcome.
"This," she said, touching the card at the upper right of the circle, "is the metamorphosis of the spiritual situation, and how your knowledge will evolve. Nerone, Justice: The achievement of balance and inner harmony after a great trial. Things set to rights. Karma restored. Things are looking up, aren't they?" she asked.

Jory smiled and nodded. Perhaps this wouldn't be so bad after all, maybe he'd be able to figure everything out. He still didn't know that he was fully comfortable knowing the future, but even this had helped him understand so much better than anyone at Hogwarts could have. In Hogwarts he'd learned theory and how to do readings, here he would learn to understand. Had the decision he'd made just minutes ago managed to change the cards this much?

Dayea moved on to the line of three which waited patiently beneath the circle. She began with the one on the left. "This is the person or the qualities which will sustain your spiritual journey," she said. "Four Dischi, Power: Holding to earthly power in the fear that it will be lost. Making yourself an obstacle to progress due to fear of change. Believing that security and identity are based on the material things." She pondered that. Could he be sustained by the very fear of his power? Could the warring of knowledge and fear actually move him forward? She would have thought it unlikely, but that was a far cry from impossible.
"This," she began, touching the card at the center of the line. "This is the qualities which you express. Three Mazze, Virtue: Personal fortitude and strength of character. Accumulated power set in motion towards a distant goal." Yes. "The initiation of an enduring partnership based on absolute trust. Honor maintained in a time of desperate struggle. Taking full responsibility for a decision, and bearing the solitude of leadership." It was as she'd thought.
She touched the final card, that at the right of the short line. "This is the person or the qualities which will reveal spiritual knowledge. The King of Discs, reversed: The dark essence of earth behaving as air, such as a diamond," she said. So many Kings for Jory. So many references to earth, to air.
"An unyielding man," she went on, "with a gift for identifying weakness and exploiting it for personal gain. One well informed about material affairs, but ignorant of larger, more pressing issues. A blind devotee, unconcerned with unintended results. A person full of greed and avarice."
She paused at that mysterious end, then drew one more card. "Is the man who will bring Jory spiritual knowledge involved with the prophecy?" she asked carefully. Charity: A firm and helping hand. Giving someone the skills and resources to succeed on their own. A second chance.

Jory's eyebrows came together as he looked at the last cards. He didn't think he liked that very much. He blinked and there was an arc of light. When he opened his eyes he shook his head once, roughly. "Looked like a spell," he said. Was it common for callbacks to prophecies to be triggered like this? And was it even a callback? There was no way for him to be sure since he didn't remember the vision.

Dayea's gaze was fixed on Jory, and for a moment she was still. "It is your turn," she said at last. "It is time to ask the cards about the prophecy. Concentrate on what you saw." He had seen part of the prophecy. That was unusual. He had great power at his fingertips; she felt lucky to have met him. "Select one card, then another one. This will help us decide how to proceed."

Jory nodded and gave another single shuffle before turning over a card. Queen of clubs. He knew these cards well and, keeping in mind what had already been said, it was relatively easy to link back. Seduction, arrogance, forcefulness. "Are we going to find out who it is? I mean, is that even possible? I don't remember the prophecy." He also knew very little about true Seers, it wasn't exactly a topic that was discussed in any real detail in school.

"Perhaps if we consult the crystal ball," Dayea suggested. "The cards will not tell us names or faces, but there are ways." She eyed the Queen, which corresponded to the Queen of Wands in the tarot. The dark essence of fire behaving as water, such as steam. A seducer who dons the guise of what others desire. This was the man again, the one who would be involved in Jory's enlightenment. Or perhaps he was involved already simply because of his place in the prophecy. "One more card, please," she prompted.

Jory turned over another card, the three of hearts. All but the opposite of the first card. Emotional expansion and progress were the traits of the card his mind latched onto. New territory, as well. If there had been any thread of doubt left in his mind that this was a turning point in his life, it was washed away with that card. "That's me again, isn't it?" Would this man in the prophecy keep coming up in his readings? He had to wonder who the man was and when they would meet.

"Yes," Dayea said. "I believe so." The cards were beginning to speak the same words now, to confirm one another and refer to things they had said before. His reading, as brief as it was, brought such strong associations to her own that it was undeniable.
"The cards have exhausted themselves," she said, shuffling hers, then setting them aside in a neat stack. "We asked how to proceed and were guided to the future. It is time for you to hear the words which you spoke." She didn't look toward her pensieve, but closed her eyes and recited the prophecy from memory.
"The cat will meet the halfblood. Ginger hair and blood. A grudge comes to term. The halfblood rises."

Another involuntary shiver raced up Jory's spine and when he closed his eyes there was another brief flash, this time of a blue eye squinted in concentration, the image strangely crisp. "It doesn't really sound good, does it?" he asked when he looked up again. To busy his hands, he slid the cards he'd pulled back into the deck and began absently shuffling it.

"What did you see, Jory?" Dayea asked slowly. She knew there had been something. She'd seen it, and she'd felt it. She pulled a single card from her deck. Eight of Pentacles, Prudence, reversed: Undue attention to small details at the expense of the big picture. "Something small?" she asked, sliding the card back into her deck. "Something which did not seem helpful?"

"An eye," Jory said. He shouldn't be seeing things like this, should he? Maybe it was because it was a first prophecy and they had spent the last however long jabbing it with various styles of the Inner Eye. "It was concentrating hard, blue. Not like mine, paler. Are these usually really, really sharp? Like surreal, even." Now he was wishing he'd read about Seers and looked for more information.

"Usually?" Dayea repeated. "No, Jory. This is not usual at all. Any wizard can perform Divination. Any seer can make a prediction. It is the Great and the Rare who see more." He had found his confidence, and she wanted to go on, but took the cards' warning for herself. She would not fill his head until he landed in conceit.
"You have great potential, Jory. We have been working toward this since you entered my room. It is difficult, yes, but when you make the most of your talents, you will find far more than you began with." They had begun with a four-line prophecy, and had perhaps set into motion the changing of lives.

Jory had never really been great at anything, he thought, and to hear it made his heart soar. He needed to watch his ego, of course, but it couldn't hurt to just have a brief moment where he felt like he was on top of the world. "I can't believe this is happening," he said. Things felt so different now, just after this relatively short lesson. He wondered how soon Indigo would get to visit again.
